Mind Over Matter

Clemens-II

“Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.” ~ Mark Twain

I first shared this lighthearted (if somewhat cavalier) quip from Mark Twain just over a year ago titled, Mind Over Matter. It seemed the obvious pull-title at the time, but I’ve wondered since if I was too glib, as if I were trying to one-up Samuel Clemens.

Insurance reductions. Movie ticket discounts. Achy joints. Wisdom. Wisdom? Maybe that’s just a bait and switch!

Let the funny man be funny. Don’t compete.

Retitling a blog post is even less clever, so instead I’m revisiting the quotation. And refocusing the title. Again I’m failing to get at the tidy, efficiency of the original. Stumped. Maybe I’ll wind up circling back to this a third time anon?

Age doesn’t matter? Hell, yes it matters. In all sorts of obvious and not so obvious ways. Driver’s license. Defend your country. First legal drink. Insurance reductions. Movie ticket discounts. Achy joints. Wisdom. Wisdom? Maybe that’s just a bait and switch!

Age certainly does matter. But if you don’t mind your age, if you accept and embrace and deemphasize it, then maybe it begins to matter less. Or matter in a different way. I’m still working on this. And a looong way to go…
